Photos sent by John Cartwright in Australia
Hi Chris Thank you for your e-mail. My father was Eric Cartwright. He joined the navy 7th May 1940 and started squad training on 20th May 1940. Because he was a qualified motor mechanic when he joined the navy, when the Dunkirk evacuation was on he and two articifers were sent to Ramsgate on 2nd June 1940 to service and maintain the small vessels that were carrying the troops back to England. If you look at http://www.unithistories.com/officers/RNVR_officersC.html you will see his service record. The photos I have of his are the officers and men outside the "Lord Warden" Hotel in Dover taken in 1940. My mother who was a WREN has listed the names, but not in any order. The other is of the Officers at Lowestoft taken in 1943. I think there may be some of Ceylon, but I'll have to find them. There are some photos of the engine room of a MTB, but once again you'll have to bear with me as I search for them. If you think they are of interest to you let me know. Regards John Cartwright
Hello again Chris. I thank you for the information regarding the books that you kindly mentioned. I have just finished Home waters and I am still waiting for Coastal forces to arrive. I now know just what your and my father and all the crews had to do in the war, many many unsung heroes. My impressions until now of MTB and MGB actions were of small fast boats firing at some safe distance in the darkness and at minimum risk to themselves, how wrong could I be ? My father was killed in a works accident when I was 13 and the only things I remember him saying about the war was that they only went out at night and he had to sometimes sleep on the boat deck during the day, he also said that they would see the bombers passing overhead as they too were leaving. I was pleased to see the picture of 349 in the book, that is 1 of 2 pictures I have from my dad. I have others and some newspaper clippings regarding actions that he must have been in. Please find attachments and you are more than welcome to post them on your site, it would be nice if they could be indentified. I am now going to ask you for a big favour. I, my sister and my mother are all certain that my dad is in the bridge picture of MTB 478 en route to Poole and this is the only recognisable picture that we know of other than the usual official portrait. The picture on your website is quite small and I understand that you may have some copy write issues but if you could e-mail me a larger copy we would all be very grateful. I have a white ensign of what my dad said was his last boat which according to his record was 505 but I now think that it might well be 478's ensign, it still has a German seaman's dagger wrapped in the middle of it. Thanks again and I hope you find the attachments of interest. Yours Bernie Morgan. If you know the identity of any of the people pictured please let me know. Ed
